Students in my class receive homework marks for most assignments that they submit. This is a mark separate from the assignment mark. If a student submits an assignment on time and it is complete they are given 5 homework marks. If they do not, they lose the five homework marks. Students can still receive the homework mark if they are sick and hand it in the next day after they receive the assignment. At the end of the term the homework mark accounts for 5% of the student's letter grade. The homework marks are not included on the progress reports that are sent out in that I believe they would cause too much confusion. The rationale behind the homework mark is to try to encourage students submit their work on time like they would have to in the "real world". It is not very punitive and is more a reward to those students who do hand their work on time.
